Radon test kits
Testing is cheap; guessing is not. A short-term test gives you a real number in a few days, and it is the first step before any mitigation decision.
Which test is right for you?
Short-term test kit
The everyday choice. A charcoal or electret kit sits in the lowest livable level of your home for a few days, then goes to a lab. It is inexpensive, simple, and accurate enough to tell you whether a system is needed.
Certified 48-hour test (real estate)
For a purchase, sale, or post-mitigation verification, a certified tester places a continuous radon monitor for a minimum of 48 hours. The monitor records hourly readings and produces the documentation that agents, inspectors, and lenders expect to see.
How to test correctly
- Place the device in the lowest level of the home that is used regularly — not a crawl space or a sealed-off storage room.
- Keep windows and exterior doors closed for 12 hours before and during the test, aside from normal entry and exit.
- Run the heating or cooling as you normally would.
- Keep the device at least 20 inches off the floor, away from exterior walls, drafts, and humidity.
- Do not move or disturb the device during the test period.
Reading your result
Below 2 pCi/L is a good result; retest every couple of years. Between 2 and 4, consider a long-term test or retest in a different season. At 4 pCi/L or above — the EPA action level — mitigation is recommended. Well above 4, and you should treat it as a priority, especially with children or a basement bedroom in the home.
After mitigation
We test again once a new system has been running. That post-installation result is the number that matters, and it is the one we put in writing for you.
